Database Abstraction with ADODBThe use of abstraction layers is a controversial topic among PHP users. There are many reasons why people use them, and likewise why they don’t. The fact is, abstraction layers will always be around and they provide a very quick way of creating applications, even though for very high traffic sites, it may be a performance hit to use large libraries if they aren’t properly scripted. In this article I will be going through the advantages and disadvantages of using the ADODB database abstraction layer. This article is biased in it’s favour but I will also be discussing the disadvantages. Introduction to PHPIn this short article, I will be introducing you to PHP. There will be no actual code, just a bit of background knowledge. This article is going to be one of a series of PHP articles/tutorials introducing you to PHP. OpenDNS, It WorksOk so I’ve made the plunge and routed my network’s DNS requests through OpenDNS. I was first quite skeptical that it would have much of a speed increase, but as soon as I tried it, I was hooked. I currently have, to be frank, a shit service provider (certainly their DNS servers). I will get random 404 errors and frequently slow access times. Because I’m now going through OpenDNS I have access to all of their caches, and as they’re so large almost every website I visit is cached already. This means that the page I’m wanting starts loading instantly. Theoretical AbuseOk so you may remember a while ago when I wrote about how I was reading through the big book of fun driving theory questions in a bid to not horribly fail. Yeah that one that I really enjoyed! Well I failed, twice. Very Addictive - CautionThanks to our lovely chum Josh from that place they named “The North”, I can’t stop having this on in the background. Its the most catchy tune type thing I’ve come across. Don’t stare at it for too long, otherwise you’ll find yourself partaking in a little whistling. This video is brought to you by LeekSpin.com and they have created this. Just to keep the law happy (although they still won’t like it). So, me and Woolies (Woolies and I….) happened to be fairly bored in a free period, and with 2 computers to spare, and a bit of know-how, we decided to partake in a quick bit of webshite. Naturally, I was in charge of prettyness, and layout, and general
content, and colour scheme, and logo, and name…..so Woolie did all the
work The Tenth DimensionI was searching around on Digg.com today, just going through old articles and such. I came across this very interesting article about the tenth dimension. It’s actually a Flash movie so I don’t know if it can be described as an article, but we’ll fight about that one later. Now for me, I have only really known about the 2nd, 3rd and 4th dimensions. This article takes you on a journey through every dimension from the 1st to the 10th. I’ve learnt more about physics in this about 15 minute video than I have done in every physics lesson in school. I’m not usually that excited about physics stuff (one could I ask why I chose to study it further) but this movie explains very clearly what each dimension is, and I don’t think you have to like physics to find it interesting. Anyway, take a look if you’ve got a spare minute. Click here, go to the navigation (hover over) and click on “Imagining the Ten Dimensions”. Fireforce 1 Explosion - Santa Pod 2006The jet propelled funny car Fireforce 1 is no more after an unfortunate event at the Santa Pod Raceway Flame & Thunder event 2006. This article will be constantly updated as more information is available to us. Hopefully it will develop into a long lasting “shrine” to Fireforce 1 as it has provided us with many good memories. Fireforce 1 has provided many people with their first experience of a jet funny car and I’m sure it will not be forgotten. You may ask why I’m personifying this car, and I ask myself that sometimes: It’s mainly because Fireforce 1 was the first jet car I ever saw, and I was about 12 at the time so it seemed all the more impressive (not that it got less impressive in later years though). (more…) Sennheiser PC160 Headphones ReviewFirst of all, mine arrived first (me being Woolie) and before the designated delivery date. This means that I win, feel free to throw roses, tomatoes etc. I won’t mention the fact that they’re broken, smell funny and the microphone is missing. (more…) Next Page » |
